Background:
Sudbury Primary School opened in January 2000 following the amalgamation of separate junior and infant schools sharing the same site. It is a large primary school with a nursery, for boys and girls aged three to 11. The school is situated in a relatively socially advantaged area but it caters for pupils from a wide socio-economic mix. Pupils come from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds. The main languages spoken are Tamil, Urdu, Gujarati and Somali. Nearly 23 per cent of pupils are identified as having special educational needs, for a variety of learning and behaviour difficulties. Teacher turnover is high. The school is strong in Key Stage 2 standardised assessment tests, and has been put in the top five per cent of schools nationally. Extra-curricular activities include Indian dance, African dance, football, tag rugby, netball, skipping, and fitness classes. The school'specialises in art, music and ICT teaching. Music lessons are offered in the recorder, violin, keyboard, harmonium and the tabla. There are accelerated programmes in all year-groups to cater for the able pupils.
