Background:

Ilford Jewish Primary School is a well-established co-educational voluntary aided primary school situated in Barkingside. Ilford Jewish Primary School was previously Stepney Jewish School founded in 1870, moving to its present site exactly 100 years later. The school is designated a two-form entry school although most year groups at Key Stage 2 currently contain three classes each. The school's published admission limit is 60. There is also a 39-place nursery that offers both part-time and full-time provision. The school believes in providing a broad and balanced curriculum that provides children with a range of opportunities to succeed and achieve. The school aims to provide a curriculum that supports that the least able and stretches the most able by matching work to the stages of development of individual children, rather than their chronological age. To achieve this the school is continuously developing its curriculum so that it provides the maximum of opportunities for children to use and develop their skills, knowledge and positive attitudes towards themselves and others. The school has a dedicated information and communication technology (ICT) suite currently with 23 desktop computers, which was opened in April 2002. In addition, all classes have a computer based in the classroom as well as access to television, video and compact disk/cassette players. Music plays an important part in the life of the school community. The school believes that music enhances the working atmosphere of the classroom as well as stimulating children's creative and imaginative ability. Art and design stimulates creativity and imagination, provides visual, tactile and sensory experiences for a child and encourages a unique way of understanding and responding to the natural and constructed world. Children gain a wide experience in games, gymnastic activities and swimming. The school's facilities include a dedicated gymnasium and the use of the public playing field adjacent to the school ground. Although in Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 subjects are taught separately in 'lessons', it believes that much of the children's learning is at its best when they use their knowledge and skills across a range of different subjects. The school aims to work to ensure that the school is a positive, challenging and stimulating learning environment; encourages high standards in all aspects of school life; promotes a positive commitment to modern orthodox Judaism and a sense of identity with Israel and fosters self respect, respect for others and the wider community.
