Background:

Opened in 1930 as county grammar school; first comprehensive intake in 1975; became grant-maintained in 1992; now has foundation status. Recent extensions and developments include purpose-built sixth-form centre and study area, music suites and fully-refurbished science laboratories; also computer rooms, and specialist design and technology classrooms. Teaching accommodation arranged in five teaching blocks. Headteacher received Promethean Award for London headteacher of the year in the 2004 teaching awards and was knighted in the 2005 Queen's Birthday Honours. The school has Beacon status (2000); DfES achievement award (2001, 2002); Leading Edge status (2003) and Humanities Specialist School status (2006).
