Background:
Founded in 1872 to accommodate needs of Roman Catholic families in Diocese of Westminster; admission restricted to baptised Roman Catholics. Over-subscribed; has nursery that accepts children from age of three as places become available. Broad curriculum aims to provide equal opportunities; also to 'foster and encourage the children's Catholic Christian beliefs'. Children's progress carefully monitored in mixed-ability classes. In 1991, school was in poor situation, but has made good progress since then; SATs results now above local and national averages. The then education secretary, Stephen Byers, mentioned school in 1998 press release to exemplify how 'for children from poor and deprived backgrounds, education can provide a ladder of opportunity'. Beacon status (1999).
