Background:

Richard Challoner School is a voluntary aided Catholic school. Opened in 1959, it takes up to four forms of entry at the age of 11 plus. The school enjoys a Greenfield site with purpose-built accommodation on a single site. Specialist teaching areas include six modern science laboratories, three design and technology rooms, an electronics workshop, a graphical communication room, three information technology rooms with total of 80 workstations (there are 65 other computers within subject departments) and purpose-built gymnasium with multi-gym. In recent years, a learning resource centre and science block has been built and in 2002, a seven classroom block was constructed. As a newly designated technology college, a new food technology facility is due for completion in January 2005. In addition there are general teaching rooms for mathematics, English, geography, history, French and Spanish language, music and drama. There is also a special needs area to support small groups and individuals who have learning difficulties. Richard Challoner has a large assembly hall used also for drama productions. On site the school has two halls, playground space and a grass area that consists of a full size playing field, a small training area and cricket nets. There is a large pitch used for rugby, football, athletics and cricket training facilities. The school offers a wide range of sporting activities. Pupils receive instruction in football, rugby, basketball, cricket, athletics, tennis and gymnastics. Other activities covered are swimming, canoeing, squash and bowling. This Catholic school is one in which the teachings of Christ permeate all aspects of school life. It seeks to offer a high standard of education for all, care to the individual and good relations between staff, students and parents. Each person is recognised as a child of God, an individual who is encouraged to develop his God-given talents.
