Background:

Riddlesdown is a school of about 1500 boys and girls situated near Purley. In 1992 Riddlesdown became the first school in Croydon to be awarded Grant Maintained Status by the Secretary of State for education and since 1999 it has been a voluntary aided school. In recent years the teaching facilities have been greatly improved. All of the classrooms in the main teaching blocks have been refurbished. In 1993 the school built a new sports hall and in 1994 the new arts centre, with facilities in music, drama and art teaching was opened. A new technology building, containing six computer rooms and bases for design technology and food technology teaching, was completed in 1995. The school is now extremely well equipped and all its accommodation is purpose designed for specialist teaching. The school has a very broad, balanced general education following the principle of National curriculum is given to all pupils. The school aims to provide environment in which pupils are positively motivated to work hard, but without oppression.
