Background:
Set in a pleasant part of Kingston very close to Richmond Park, St Paul's is a two-form entry junior school which expects the highest standards of academic attainment and behaviour from its pupils. It is a church school with a strong affiliation to the local church and plays a very positive and active role within the local community. It was founded in 1870 and moved to its present site in 1972. The award winning hexagonal design has been much admired. The school is proud of its particular strentgths in music and sport. There are two choirs, an orchestra and over 100 children receive individual music tuition. The senior choir has won awards for the standard of its singing and children from the school have sung in opera at Covent Garden and the Albert Hall. The school has also recorded songs for a published primary music scheme, presented a live concert on local radio and regularly taken part in local concerts. The school's football and netball teams regularly acheive excellent results in borough competitions and the cricket team has often represented Kingston in a regional competition at the Oval. Children from St Paul's raise money for a school in a shanty town in Uganda by helping to pay staff salaries and ensuring the children there have sufficient materials to enable learning to take place. In the past two years enough money was also raised to construct a water pipe to the school and build more brick buildings.
