Background:

Founded in 1638 from endowment of John and Thomas Tiffin, merchants of Kingston; first Tiffin Boys' School opened on the Fairfield in 1880; moved to present location on tree-lined site in centre of Kingston-upon-Thames in 1929; became grant-maintained in 1993; became voluntary aided in 1999; specialist performing arts college from September 2003; harnessing traditions of music, dance and drama; choral scholars every year. Now housed in number of buildings, including renovated listed building dating from 1790s, the main building (1929), the south building (1980s), the creative studies centre (1991) and the sports centre (1995). Pupils use playing fields at Hampton Court and Kingston's own facilities are good, including gardens and a practice field. Excellent laboratories, ICT rooms, technology, art, drama, and music studios. Sixth-form centre and library. Innovative work on independent learning focused on the newly-opened Dempsey Building and Judge Lecture Theatre. Extra-curricular activities are strong: rugby, cricket, rowing, badminton, table tennis, and chess. Proud of charitable fundraising. Specialist performing arts college status.
