Background:
Broadmead Junior's original 1970s building has expanded to accommodate rising numbers and now includes more classrooms, and new resources and furnishings. Eight acres of fields surround the school, and part of this land has been set aside as a conservation area. Broadmead aims to cultivate an atmosphere which is 'supportive of each child and respectful of their culture and parental expectation'. Extra-curricular activities range from boys and girls football, supported by trainers from Crystal Palace FC, to French, gymnastics, art, drama and chess. The 'strong' tradition of arts and music is nurtured by instrumental tuition and through participation in Croydon Schools' Music Association and Croydon Schools' Dance Association events. The school was a winner in the 1997 BT Aim High Awards in recognition of 'an outstanding contribution to raising student performance through partnership between business and education'. This resulted in the headteacher attending a reception at Highgrove with HRH Prince Charles.
