Background:

Childeric Primary School in New Cross, south east London is in a historically rich and diverse neighbourhood in the borough of Lewisham. The school is also on the borders of the millennium borough of Greenwich, yet only ten minutes from the centre of London with its museums, galleries and theatres. The school is close to Kent too, giving access to the countryside and all it has to offer. The school is housed in a large Victorian building which takes in 60 children into two reception classes each school year. Children are admitted to school during the academic year in which they reach the age of five. The school also has a flourishing nursery which takes 50 children in each of its two sessions morning and afternoon. Some children attend full time. The school is organised into three sections; foundation stage covering nursery and reception Key Stage One (KS1) for 6 and 7 year olds in Year 1 and Year 2 and Key Stage Two (KS2) for 8 to 11 year olds in Years 3-6. At the end of Years 2 and 6 children take Standard Assessment Tests (SATs) to measure their attainment against national standards. The results of these tests are published by the school every year in the annual report to parents. The school aims to provide a high quality education to all its pupils through a rich, diverse and inspiring curriculum; to promote a positive atmosphere in which both children and staff are encouraged to reach their full potential and take pride in their achievements; to value, respect and celebrate the diversity of cultures and religion of its school and to encourage children to feel a part of their community; to provide a safe, secure and supportive environment in which all children and adults feel valued and respected; to encourage children's well beings by creating an ethos that nurtures and develops self-esteem; to give its children the confidence and desire to make a meaningful contribution to the wider world and to develops a strong sense of social responsibility.
