Background:
Oakthorpe Infant and Junior Schools were opened in 1937 and amalgamated in September 1997 to become Oakthorpe Primary School. The school'serves a multicultural, semi-industrial area of Palmers Green. It is a single-storey building with various play areas and a school field, which is used for games activities. Facilities include two halls, a speech and drama room, and a modern library. Oakthorpe also has a dedicated ICT room, and pupils have their own e-mail addresses. Many pupils attend language school at weekends and the school has two language support teachers. The school is also a member of the Nationally Outstanding Primary Schools SCITT consortium linked with Nottingham University. Pupils can take part in football, gymnastics, dance, French and horse riding. The school 'Kwik Cricket' team took part in a Primary School World Cup Cricket competition and reached fourth place. Other activities include an art club, and speech and drama. The school is also a previous winner of the Barclays Drama awards. Year 5 children carry out field study work for an extended weekend in Dorset and Year 6 children visit the Isle of Wight. A camp also takes place every year for children in Years 5 and 6.
