Background:
Housed in a 'spacious' building that dates from 1884, Yerbury is situated in an inner city area in north Islington, and pupils come from a variety of socio-economic backgrounds. This 'very friendly' school is over-subscribed, receiving 150 applicants for 60 places. Facilities include a library, music room, computer suite, interactive whiteboards in all classrooms and parents' room. The school'staff is trained in cognitive accelerated mathematical education (CAME) and it has lots of community links, extra-curricular activities. There is also 'generous' outdoor space nearby for playing and sports. A 'broad and balanced' curriculum is extended by an outside educational visit each term. Children with special needs can receive extra assistance from external sources. Every pupil is taught to play a musical instrument, and the school is proud of its strength in this field, while also highlighting pupils' skills in physical education, technology and the creative arts. The school'singles out the quality of leadership of its 'enthusiastic and committed' teachers, who underline their policy of inclusion. They regard the daily whole school assembly as an opportunity for parents and the local community to sustain their involvement with the day-to-day life of the school. An 'active' home-school association maintains communication with parents and organises social events, while also raising money. 'The school provides positive, caring, purposful, focused, balanced and rich curriculum'.
