Background:
Hendon School is non-denominational. It was one of the first designated language colleges. The school was one of the first five schools in the UK to achieve the 'International School Award' in 1998, in recognition of its international curriculum and links with schools abroad, and it has also received the Barnet 'Health promoting school' award in recognition of its health education programme.French and Japanese are available languages. All pupils study drama and religious studies. ICT is taught as a discrete subject but pupils are also expected to develop ICT skills across all subjects within the curriculum. Each subject has its own specialist suite of rooms and facilities include eight science laboratories, two new drama studios, a new music suite, and six workshops for technology including specialist facilities for food and textiles. There are five specialist computer rooms with additional ICT facilities in department areas. The school is fully networked with e-mail and internet access for all subjects. Facilities on site for sports include a large sports hall, a gymnasium and fitness area, and a grassed area. In addition to the lending library there are computers with CD ROM packages and access to the internet. There is a separate careers library and a member of staff responsible for organising careers education and work experience. Pupils receive careers guidance through the Personal and Social Education programme. Pupils also have the opportunity to participate in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme and awards are earned at bronze, silver and gold levels.
