Background:

Founded in 1927 as Wallington County School for Boys, the school is set in nine acres of landscaped grounds against the background of Beddington Park. A new science block was added in 2000. The school has a traditional character that promotes academic values, personal qualities and sporting and cultural activities. There are well-established industry links and work-experience for all pupils in year 11. Other activities include orchestra, choir, wind band, brass group, debating, drama, regular concerts and theatrical events whilst clubs include art, chess, computing, Islamic Society and Christian Union. The main competitive sports are rugby, hockey, cross-country, athletics and cricket. The Manor Trophy is awarded to pupils who win the road relay and assault course, which involves crossing the River Wandle. There is an active parent, teacher and friends' association and The Old Walcountians' Association, with clubhouse and grounds in Woodmansterne. Pupils are encouraged to serve the community and the school has raised more than £30,000 for charity in three years. Pupils can study in the library until 4.30pm; many clubs and activities. Over-subscribed, with more than eight applications per place. Specialist science college status from 2004. Sportsmark (2003); Sportsmark Gold (2003); DfES achievement award (2002).
