Background:
Woodcote High School was originally an 11 to 14 school, but this changed when Croydon schools re-organised in 1988. The school occupies 47 acres at the southern tip of Croydon and most of its buildings date from the late 1950s, with the addition of a large new block in 1988. Facilities include a sports hall, drama hall, music studios and instrumental practice rooms, and a new music and art block was added in 1995, with a second music studio and practice rooms. The school has competitive teams in all sports, won all four leagues in the Croydon Cricket Association in 1993, and reached the finals in all five Croydon Soccer Cup competitions in 1995, winning three of them. Nearly 160 pupils receive regular instrumental tuition and there are two choirs, an orchestra, bands and ensembles. All pupils are involved in community service in Year 10. Latin is taught to all pupils in Year 8 and several groups study it to GCSE.
