Background:
This traditional school was founded in 1685 by Dr Thomas Tenison, who was then vicar of St Martin-in-the-Fields and later became Archbishop of Canterbury. In 1928 the school moved to its present site opposite the Oval cricket ground, on ground owned by the Duchy of Cornwall. The one-time grammar school became a comprehensive in the 1970s and grant-maintained in 1993, enabling it to improve its building (including five newly-refurbished science labs and a new technical block), before reverting to voluntary aided status in September 1999. The school is proud of its sporting achievements. It has 'excellent' playing fields at Motspur Park. 'Underpinned by Christian values', The school's ethos is one of academic success within a 'stimulating and happy environment' and it aims for good relationships with staff to help pupils develop their personalities, talents and abilities.
