Background:

Bishop Stopford's School was opened in 1967 but occupies very solid buildings that date from 1934. The school has a new sports hall, and the library has been refurbished and extended. The Orchard Wing provides sixth form accommodation, a range of form rooms, and three rooms which are fully equipped for the development of ICT skills. The Jubilee Wing is a purpose-built science block comprising ten laboratories, and it stands on the edge of large playing fields. At locations throughout the school other ICT facilities have been upgraded. Extra-curricular activities in drama, music and sport are undertaken by large numbers of students. The school is represented in football, athletics, basketball, cricket, cross-country, golf, hockey, netball and rugby at all the major events, and league and cup competitions run within the Borough, as well as at county and national level when appropriate. Each year the school raises money through house and other activities for a wide range of charities. In 2002 the school won an Achievement Award for raising student results.
