Background:
The two-form entry maintained primary school is situated in the Sheen area of Richmond-upon-Thames, 15 minutes walk from Richmond Park. Founded in 1913, the current brick single storey buildings date from the late 1960s. Facilities include tarmac playgrounds with climbing frames for the infant and junior school, a large sports field and the use of the adjacent Bank of England sports facilities for swimming, rugby and football. A new information and computer technology (ICT) suite with 14 networked machines opened in 2000 and there is a free-standing computer in each classroom. Other recent refurbishments include new infant and junior libraries. The school offers a 'broad and balanced curriculum to develop academic, creative, social and personal skills', with topic work a 'particular strength'. Junior school football, cricket and netball teams compete annually in borough matches. The 'extensive' range of after school activities includes football, netball, tennis, ICT, chess, French, Spanish and dance. Music is a 'strong feature' of the school. Peripatetic teachers offer violin, clarinet, guitar, trumpet, trombone, saxophone and French horn, there is a junior school choir and regular half-term concerts. French is taught in Years 5 and 6, and there are annual visits to a link school in St Omer. Special educational needs (SEN) provision is currently under review following the recent appointment of a new SEN co-ordinator. There is a 'strong' governing body and 'close' home-school links, with the parent-teacher association is 'outstandingly good at raising funds and organising social events'. A large number of parent helpers support work in class. Fund-raising events are organised by the children for charity. The school is over-subscribed, receiving 70 applications for 60 places. After-school care is organised by the LEA for a cluster of primary schools, with children accompanied to other premises.
