Background:
Morpeth is a popular school in the heart of London's east end. Its 1200 pupils, both boys and girls, are from many different ethnic groups and speak many different languages. The Morpeth building provides excellent facilities for science, techonology, art and photography. In addition, there had been substantial refurbishment to other areas of the school and it now has a new south wing which houses dining facilities, learning resources and the study centre, further enhancing the teaching and learning opportunities for pupils. There is a supervised study centre and homework club and the school library is open to pupils every evening for reading and research before and after-school. Extra help is given by its very strong language and learning support department. Morpeth has strong links with primary schools based on a highly successful education action zone. Pupils from local schools regualrly visit Morpeth for lessons to get them used to life in a secondary school. Year 8 pupils are able to study a second language - either Bengali or Spanish in addition to French. There is a education department provides a wide range of sports activities. Pupils regularly participate in local and national competitions. There is flourshing performing arts department which offers a range of music and drama activities including a school orchestra and jazz band. Pupils are encourged to learn to play a musical instrument. At Morpeth it emphasises achievement and lessons are designed to encourage and motivate pupils, helping them to become independent learners. Morpeth is a commuity school. It works closely with all sections of the community to provide a safe and challenging experience for its pupils.
