Background:

St Mary's Catholic Primary School was founded in 1933 by the Religious Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Mary to provide for the Catholic families of the parish. The school has a pond, a wild area with paved access, a garden area where vegetables are grown by pupils, a playing field and two playgrounds. Other facilities include a heated indoor swimming pool, a music room, two halls (one of which has stage and lighting facilities), a library, learning support and information technology facilities. There has been refurbishment and rebuilding in recent years and a third phase of rebuilding will begin shortly. Pupils are offered the opportunity to learn Italian at Key Stage 2, as part of an initiative run by the Italian Embassy. Sporting opportunities include swimming, athletics, football, rugby, netball, cricket and rounders. Further extra-curricular activities include Le Club Frangais, chess, short tennis, mathematics and badminton. There is a parents' and friends' association to support the school. The school has won Schools Curriculum Award (1990); Investor in People status (2000); DfES achievement award (2002). The School aims to create and sustain an environment in which all people involved - children, staff and parents - may grow in their faith and in their love of God, developing respect for themselves and an awareness of the needs and gifts of others.
