Background:

The school dates back to the end of the 19th century, when it was founded by the La Retraite Sisters as a private school; voluntary aided since 1965, although it remains under the trusteeship of the La Retraite Community. It is situated in the grounds of Knapdale House, an 18th-century building. After-school clubs include football, cricket, chess, drama, music, short tennis and French; educational visits are encouraged. Pupils also spend 'considerable' time raising money for charities, concentrating on local issues. School has strong community links and encourages good communications between homes, school and parish. St Anselm's Association for parents, staff and friends; helps the school through fund-raising activities. At St Anselm's School the school aims to work together with parents and children to promote a hard-working, caring atmosphere where everyone is valued. The school is over-subscribed with at least three applications for each place. As a Catholic school and community, the school shares a common vision where Christ is at the centre of all the work. The school policies embody principles of love, service, respect and reconciliation and they strive to recognise the dignity of each member of the community and to nurture and challenge the pupils to be lifelong learners.
