Background:

St John's is a Church of England Voluntary Aided School. The school'started its life in a corrugated iron building on part of the present site, in 1871. The permanent school buildings were completed in 1878. Various additions and improvements have been made over the years and in 1985 a new hall was built. Two new classrooms and a nursery unit were added in 1993 with funding partly provided by parents, governors and the local community. The school building and site are owned by the Church of England and the governors' responsibilities include the external maintenance of the building.There are a number of school clubs run on a voluntary basis by staff and parents. Currently, clubs include netball, football, information communication technology, choir, conservation work, stamps, French and chess. The curriculum of the school also includes personal, social and health education, citizenship, environmental studies, economic and industrial understanding and careers education. The school's links with the local community are strong. It has good links with Bedelsford Special School. It seeks to introduce children to the Christian faith. It also places great emphasis on children gaining knowledge about other world faiths and about individuals from all walks of life, religions and cultures who have made a significant contribution to the world. St John's School aims to provide a secure, stimulating and happy environment where all children are encouraged to take pleasure from their learning.
