Background:

There has been a church school in Shirley since 1834, founded by the parish of St John the Evangelist. St John's CofE Primary School opened in 1954 after the original building suffered bomb damage during the war. Set back from the road, it comprises seven classrooms, a dining room and an assembly hall which is equipped with PE equipment and portable staging and offers facilities for collective worship, PE, school performances and social occasions. In recent years the school has relocated and refurbished its library and built a new computer suite, and much of the school now receives Internet access. The school has a playing field and two asphalt playgrounds, and it participates regularly in borough league and cup competitions. It has close connections with the parish church of St John's, and is involved in fund-raising for charities, particularly those with significance for the school, such as leukaemia and cystic fibrosis.
