Background:

Opened in 1957, St Joseph's RC Primary is housed in buildings which are 'in quite good repair', despite the site being 'quite small'. Facilities include two demountable classrooms, although one of these is soon to be replaced by a permanent classroom. The school also hopes to become a two form entry, to help overcome the current over-subscription. St Joseph's aims to provide a 'happy and secure environment for each pupil' and seeks to be 'a community which complements the home and parish in attempting to live out the values of the Gospel'. It also ensures that the requirements of the national curriculum are met through a 'broad and balanced' curriculum, in addition to which French and Italian are taught at Key Stage 2. The school offers a range of extra-curricular activities including a maths club, football, netball, rounders, athletics, tennis, short tennis, aerobics, rugby, folk and chess clubs. Pupils are also taken on a residential visit to the Isle of Wight each year. Parental involvement is encouraged, especially in helping with clubs and the 'very active' parent and friends association regularly organises fundraising events. The school works closely with the parish community, on such projects as art and book weeks. Pupils are encouraged to raise funds for charity and the school mainly supports the poorer parishioners of Canning Town.
