Background:

St Mary's CofE Primary School is a voluntary aided Church of England Primary School, part of the Church's mission of service to the community in Putney. The school caters for boys and girls between ages of four and 11. It is the oldest of the parochial and national schools founded for the benefit of the labouring classes of Putney. The school dates from a Deed of 1819 when it was situated in a part of a field of two acres in the back lanes of Putney. The older part comprises the hall, two classrooms, kitchen and cloakroom and is fronted by a garden on Charlwood Road. The main classroom block was built in 1867 as the girls and infants schools. The school contains an early years unit comprising nursery and reception classes. There is an art room, administration offices, head's room, library and an ICT suite. There are two enclosed play areas in addition to a large, well stocked playground. The school provides extra-curricular instrumental lessons in violin, piano, recorder and drums. Sport is an important part of the life at the school. There are school teams that take part in local competitions in athletics, cricket, cross-country, football, netball, rounders and swimming. The school aims to provide a high quality education to enable every child to reach their fullest potential within an inclusive and nurturing Christian community.
