Background:

The school is over 160 years old, and the present building is the third of this name. The school was founded by George Green, a successful shipbuilder from Popular. This building was replaced in 1884 by one at the corner of Kerby Street and West India Dock road, and finally in January 1976, the present school came into being at the southern tip of the Isle of Dogs facing Greenwich. The second building is still in use, and is occupied by Tower Hamlets College as an annexe. It became the secondary school for the Isle of Dogs, sharing its building with other agencies. The school is a co-educational 11-19 voluntary controlled school. It is not affiliated to any religious denomination. The school is a fully inclusive comprehensive. The school aim is to meet the needs of all its pupils and to provide and very best quality education to them. All those who work in the school have a responsibility to promote these values and principles. The school has a clear moral purpose is essential in creating an effective school. The school needs to provide enough support and challenge at every aspect of the organisation. Strong, effective leadership is the key to making things happen. The school must challenge under performance at all levels of the organisation-staff as well as pupils. The school aim is to provide a well-ordered secure and stimulating environment for learning; to set high standards, expectations and goals for all members of the school community; to prepare their young people well for adult life and learning beyond school through achieving a sense of purpose and self discipline, discovering the excitement, responsibilities and challenges of learning, learning to work independently and co-operatively with others; to give young people the opportunity to develop and understanding and sensitivity of society and of the community in which they live; to encourage and enable parents/carers to become active partners in the education of their children; to ensure that there is pupil access and entitlement to a broad and balanced curriculum and to work together to help all individuals to achieve their full potential.
