Background:
The school building dates back to 1930, but it did not become the home of West Thornton Primary School until 1976. In September 1997 a new wing opened, and this has provided greatly improved facilities, particularly for the reception children. All classes are of mixed ability. Children come from a variety of cultural and ethnic backgrounds and this diversity gives the school its special character. It has separate assembly and dining halls, the latter serving as a gym, and also has a drama and music studio, a computer suite, and libraries for infants and juniors. The national curriculum forms the basis of most of the work that children undertake. Extra-curricular activities include netball (Years 4 and 5), tennis (Years 2 and 3), pond club, reading club (Years 3 and 4) and recorders (Years 3 and 5). The school aims to provide a balanced and broad curriculum and to promote the intellectual, moral, aesthetic and physical development of each child.
