Background:

Wolsey Junior School recently celebrated its 50th anniversary with four weeks of themed approaches including Life in Tudor Times (to stress the connections with Cardinal Wolsey and King Henry VIII) and Life in 1949. This is the most central of the nine schools on the New Addington estate, which mainly consists of local authority flats and housing. An above average number of pupils are entitled to free meals and nearly a third of the school's pupils are on the register of special educational needs. The schools on the estate work closely together and have formed the New Addington Schools Partnership, which secured Education Action Zone status in September 1998. Wolsey School shares a site with the infant school and offers a large playground and playing field. In order to improve the play area, it has recruited an artist in residence to help realise the designs of the children. The school has a proud record of involvement with the local community, participating in the annual carnival every year and performing at the Addington community centre and pop-in centre for senior citizens at Christmas. The school also pursues an active partnership with the Continuing Education Training Service to provide classes for parents/carers on-site during the school day, and is involved in the Fieldway SRB initiative to provide improved opportunities for targeted groups. It is proud of its extra-curricular provision and offers 15 clubs catering for large number of children. The sports teams are a credit to the school, and are very successful. The school aims to provide supportive and caring teaching and learning ethos to ensure that every child has the right to learn without disruption and to feel supported and valued.
