Background:

Broomfield School is situated in the North London suburb of Southgate. While it is open to applicants from a wide area across the boroughs of Barnet, Enfield and Harringay, the great majority come from within a close radius of two miles. It is, therefore, a local school, and has close links with the local junior schools from which the majority of its new entrants arrive. It has laboratories, food technology areas, art rooms and a purpose-built sixth form centre. In 1997, Broomfield was placed among the top ten most improved schools in the country and now compares very favourably with any other secondary school in the area, state-funded or independent. In 2000, over 52 per cent of its pupils achieved 5 GCSE passes in grades A-C, a figure well above the national average. The school has been given an A* or A category when compared with similar schools for the past five years. As a result it received the DfES School Achievement Award in 2002. The school aims to provide all of its pupils with the highest quality education enabling them to take their place as effective members of society.
