Background:
Hague Primary School was founded in 1883 in west Bethnal Green. The inner city's ethnically diverse population is reflected in the school's intake of whom only 4 per cent speak English as their first language and 67 per cent of whom qualify for free school meals. There is a positive attitude to these challenges based on putting a 'high emphasis on academic achievement'. In order to encourage literacy, all Year 1 pupils receive free books as part of the 'Reading is Fundamental' scheme. The library makes available book and video packs for children to take home which enable parents to become more involved in their child's learning. The 'thriving' school bookshop runs a savings stamps scheme to help pupils buy books of their own. Hague Primary's language needs are addressed by the provision of two full-time English language teachers, a bilingual nursery nurse and further part-time bilingual classroom support. Children participate in visits to museums and galleries across London and have established links with the Immigrants Museum. Residential trips have been made to Suffolk and day trips are made to the countryside to broaden pupils' understanding of rural life. After school, pupils may take part in cricket and football clubs. They raise money for Marie Curie Cancer Care, Barnardos and Help the Aged and community links are fostered with local police officers, the fire service and representatives of varied religious communities.
