Background:
Situated in Hendon, near M1, school was established in 1944 as part of Jewish Secondary Schools movement. Boys and girls taught separately on sites 1.5 miles apart. Boys' school granted voluntary-aided status in 1959; girls' school remained independent until 1984, when two schools amalgamated; became grant-maintained in 1994. Girls' site is modern and purpose-built; boys' site is newly-rebuilt with facilities for science, technology, information technology, art, music, business studies, modern languages, English and mathematics, in addition to library and hall. Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme; wins chess awards annually and regularly reaches finals of mathematics Olympiad and chemistry competitions. Specialist business and enterprise college status. Before-school care, from 7.40am; after-school care, until 5.15pm. Over-subscribed, with 1.5 applications per place. DfES achievement award (2002, 2003, 2004). Ethos: 'Thoroughly sound Jewish and general education'.
