Background:
Meadlands is a small village school, which has been successfully educating children from Ham and North Kingston since 1952. The school has a well-equipped nursery, which has its own entrance, outdoor area and accepts children from the age of three. The school is situated on a beautiful site close to the River Thames between Richmond and Kingston. It has a large hall/gymnasium, fine information and communication technology facilities (ICT), a music studio and an attractive library. The recent Ofsted described the school as a 'good and effective school' with 'good teaching' and 'very good curricular enrichment'. As a small community school it believes in offering a distinctive, dynamic and innovative place to learn, within a caring, supportive atmosphere. The school values academic and personal success, and provide a range of additional support to ensure equality of opportunity. The development of literacy, numeracy and good work habits are given high priority at Meadlands. However, the school is also committed to providing a rich, diverse curriculum: music and the arts, set alongside its extra-curricular programme, are key elements of this. The school is very proud recipient of both the Basic Skills Agency Quality Mark and an Investors in People status. In October 2003, it also achieved a Healthy Schools Award and is currently working towards an Artsmark. Its school grounds have won many environmental awards: the school make good use of its extensive playing fields, specialist environmental area and playgrounds. Ofsted also commented on its 'very strong links with parents' - crucial to the partnership that home and school must have to support each child's development. Meadlands is a happy and caring community school where all are welcomed and valued. The school promotes and encourages a love of learning. Teachers inspire and challenge. Its expectations are high. Effort and success are equally valued. This enables children to achieve their full academic potential. The school'strives to help children develop into thoughtful and responsible young people with high self-esteem, who respect themselves, each other and their environment.
