Background:
St Barnabas Church of England School was founded in 1847 and is said to have been the first free school in London. It was opened for 'the instruction of 500 poor children and the maintenance of 12 orphan girls in the Christian tradition'. The school is still on its original site with much of its original character. Inside the building there is a charming contrast of modern and historical features. This school is a Church of England School and this influences the ethos and atmosphere of the school. Religious education contributes to the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of all children. Children of all ages take part in outings in school time to places of interest. These visits are related to the work they do in the classroom and are an important part of the teaching programme. The school ethos is to offer its children a high standard of education within a caring and secure environment where honesty, independence and tolerance are valued.
