Background:
St Edmund's Roman Catholic Primary School was opened in Whitton on 10th January 1939, as an infant and first year junior school with accommodation for 100 children. At that stage there were two classrooms and an adjoining hall, which now form the first two infant classrooms. During this period the school was administered by the Sisters of Mercy. As the number of children increased, additions were made to the building so that the school could become a combined infant and junior School. There have been further extensions to the site in 1974, 1993 and 1997 to meet the increasing demand for the school. A wide range of extra-curricular activities are offered at lunchtime and after-school. These activities include soccer, netball, athletics, football, country dancing, gymnastics, recorder, computer, maths club and book club. Residential school journeys occur in the summer term for children in Year 5, who have a history/geography based trip, and Year 6 children are provided with the chance to participate in an activity based trip which supports the physical education curriculum.
