Background:
Founded in 1859, St Joseph's moved to its current site in 1969. The premises are situated in an area of environmental protection, bordering on the Barking Abbey heritage site. The school has seven classrooms, a new resources room, a purpose-built nursery, and a library developed by the parents' association. The school's intake is predominantly catholic, and there are waiting lists for most year groups. It offers a variety of sports, with soccer, netball and athletics teams attending borough and diocesan tournaments. Small group music lessons in cello, violin and brass are given by the borough's peripatetic music staff. The school has a supportive parents' association, which provides £5,000 a year for curriculum development.
