Background:
Founded in 1848, boys and girls were originally educated separately at St Thomas of Canterbury. The school later became co-educational, but was divided into junior and infant schools, before finally becoming a fully co-educational primary school in 1992. There are close links with St Thomas's Church next door. The school has benefited from a recent building programme which has included a new hall and music room. Music is given high priority. There is an active school choir and all children are provided with the opportunity to learn the recorder. Tuition is also available in the flute, clarinet, trumpet, guitar and violin and there is a school orchestra. After-school activities and clubs include country dancing, football, netball, art, book club and drama. Older pupils are set by ability in mathematics and English to enable pupils with special educational needs to be taught in smaller groups. The school aims to provide the best possible education for all children, where the teachings of Christ inform all its actions and the way in which they treat one another.
