Background:
Founded by Dame Henrietta Barnett in 1911 at centre of Hampstead Garden Suburb, which she also created; shares its building, designed by Lutyens, with adult education institute. Despite limited facilities, school has notable physical education department, offering athletics, sailing and outdoor pursuits; has its own field centre in Wiltshire, a thriving classics department and clubs including public-speaking, Jewish Club, dance, gym, chess and two orchestras. Strong school council which discusses curriculum, uniform, discipline and other issues; Peer Education Programme has won national recognition. European work-experience offered in France, Sweden and Germany. DfES achievement award (2003). Over-subscribed, with 11 applications per place.
