Background:

Harry Gosling was formed in September 1998 from the amalgamation of Harry Gosling Infant and Harry Gosling Junior schools, after both schools failed their inspections. In 'one of the fastest turnarounds in the country', the school was declared out of special measures in July 1999. The school is located in buildings which date back to 1910 a short distance from Aldgate Station in London. The area is one where levels of social disadvantage and unemployment are high; more than 60% of pupils are entitled to free school meals and there are 168 pupils on the school's special needs register. The pupils are almost all of Bangladeshi origin, only 24 coming from other ethnic backgrounds. The school has strong links with the local community from which volunteers from the Bank of America play maths games with targeted pupils and other volunteers read with the children at lunch times. The pupils designed the school's logo in 1998, which includes the motto, 'The future is bright'.
