Background:

Hermitage School is situated in the heart of Wapping in east London, an area which has changed tremendously since the school opened in 1989. The school is housed in an 'attractive' modern brick and Welsh slate building and the premises will soon be expanded to include extra classrooms, another hall, a parents' room, an infant library and a science and technology room. The ethnic intake of pupils is extremely diverse, with 87% of children learning English as an additional language. The school puts a positive emphasis on foreign languages, and all children learn French from nursery age onwards. The school has 'much to offer pupils', including an after school club five days a week, where pupils can enjoy extra-curricular music, varied sporting activities, art, French and Spanish, pen friends and exchanges, magic club, poetry, dance and drama. Pupils may also attend the study support group after school or arrive early for the breakfast club. The curriculum is further enhanced by contributions from visiting actors, artists, musicians, writers and poets. The school is proud of the 'excellent parental involvement' which supports the children both educationally and socially.
