Background:

Jessop Primary School was built in the 1930's in a residential area of Herne Hill and has recently been renovated. The school also has a separate nursery and two large, attractive playgrounds. The school has two assembly/PE halls, a large dining room and well-lit classrooms. Other facilities include a library, computer suite and music room. The school aims to provide a broad curriculum outside the core subjects for all pupils, including PE, music, art, design and technology and drama. The school aims to create additional space for specific subject areas and activities. It will be looking at new and flexible ways to organise teaching and learning to meet the needs of its pupils. It has already started to do this during 2002/03. The school has made a successful quarter of a million pound bid for better PE and sports facilities including an all-weather pitch, changing rooms and floodlighting. The school has redeveloped the ICT suite and invested in more computers so that children can use ICT in every subject area, whether in the computer suite or in their own classrooms. Jessop encourages links with local organisations through visits, talks and class-work. It has links with the Carnegie library, it visits neighbouring parks and Brixton leisure centre.
