Background:
Clara Grant Primary dates back to the turn of the 20th century when it was orginally called Devons. In 1993, the school was renamed after its first headteacher, who had campaigned on behalf of East End children and their families. She gave funds and donated gifts from the upper and middle classes (including Queen Mary) in 'farthing bundles' to any pupil small enough to walk under the school's arch. Still housed in the original building, Clara Grant Primary has developed into a 'thriving multi-cultural' school with 'strong' links to the community that provides its pupils. Sporting achievements include winning 'most' of the football matches played, doing 'very well' in the inter-schools cross country running and setting a new Tower Hamlets 600m running record. The school is oversubscribed in some year groups.
