Background:

The school was founded in 1921 when Essex County Council took over the former Hare Hall and converted it into a school. The original name of the school was the Ramford County High School for Boys but the first headmaster changed it to the name it bears today. In 1973 it became a four-form entry boys comprehensive school and in 1991 became 11-16 schools in accordance with the decision by the Havering Education committee to set up Sixth Form College. In the technology department it has three well-equipped technology rooms and a newly constructed food technology department. There are extra-curricular clubs in art, drama, dance, and media. The school has two computer networks for the students to use and these are used extensively in the teaching of all the subjects. The computer rooms are open throughout the school day and at the end of school for all students to use. The school has raised money to support such charities as the NSPCC, and the St Bartholomews hospital in London as well as the St Francis Hospice in Hervering-Atte-Bower. The religious education in the school is both non-denominational and non-sectarian and follows the agreed syllabus adopted by the Havering Education Authority. The library was redecorated in 1999 to a very high standard and currently contains over 19000 books, a variety of compact disk-read only memory, resource packs and videotapes. The school has a wide range of extra-curricular activities including football, rugby, cricket and basketball. The school aims to provide the highest standards of education possible for all students while retaining the best of traditional methods in such a way that will reflect the needs of its students in the 21st century.
