Background:

The Avenue Primary School was founded at the beginning of the 20th century as Belmont National School in buildings near St John's Church. In the 1950s the main Key Stage 2 (junior) section was built on its present site, with the Key Stage 1 (infant) section being added in the 1970s. The Avenue is a community primary school with a nursery. There is a Key Stage 1, (infant) department for pupils upto seven years and Key Stage 2, (junior) department for pupils up to age 11. A three reception classroom extension was completed in 2000, enabling the nursery to be integrated into the main school building and the school to develop an early years unit. In 2002 a five Key Stage 2 classroom extension was added. The two extensions have increased the school's capacity to 656 and it has grown from a two-form entry to a three-form entry school. Its pupils benefit from the extensive facilities, which it offers: these include a swimming pool, playing fields, two halls, an environmental area with a pond, and two computer suites. Children are encouraged to take part in a wide range of sports, both within the curriculum and through extra-curricular activities. The school believes that learning should be fun and so it also organise many curriculum enhancement activities including educational visits, residential journeys to outdoor activity centres, visits from theatre groups, annual book week and curriculum theme days. There are many extra-curricular activities. These may include chess, computer club, choir, French, Spanish, table tennis, football, netball, tag rugby and cricket. It also arranges for external providers to run additional clubs such as dance, swimming and short tennis. The school aims to promote in the children appropriate attitudes towards one another, towards their work and towards the environment in which they work.
