Background:
Built in 1915, the school occupies a typical three-storey building of that era. It is a two and a half form entry, which enables it to admit up to 75 children in each year group, and has used its funding to employ an extra teacher which means that there are just 25 children in each class. Early Years is situated on the ground floor and the nursery occupies a separate building across the playground. Key Stage 1 classes are also situated mainly on the ground floor, with two classrooms on the middle floor and Key Stage 2 occupies both first and second floors of the building. There are three halls, two of which are used as libraries, television areas and for teaching activities. All assemblies take place in the third, which is also used for Key Stage 1 PE. Key Stage 2 PE and indoor games take place in the dining hall located on the other side of Bantry Street. The school also houses a primary learning support class funded by Excellence in Cities. Pupils attending Brunswick come mainly from local estates. Many families are entitled to welfare benefits and more than 50% of the children are entitled to free school meals. It also has a number of refugees and families seeking asylum. A large percentage of children therefore have access to a language other than English. The most commonly spoken languages are Yoruba, Twi, Turkish and Vietnamese. The children are taught all National Curriculum subjects and have access to after school sports, run by the PE manager. They can enjoy drama, which is managed by the literacy manager and run by the Globe Theatre, and many children attend the school choir.
