Background:

Charles Dickens Primary School dates from 1877. In 1901 it increased in size with the addition of three halls and, though originally called Lant Street School, it changed its name in 1911 to Charles Dickens School, since Charles Dickens lived in the street as a boy, when his father was in Marshalsea Prison. The accommodation is on three floors: the nursery and reception classes are on the ground floor, then with age the children move to a higher level, the oldest children being accommodated on the top floor. Computers are used for a variety of purposes including word processing and data handling. The school has close links with the Tate gallery of modern art and the Bankside gallery.
