Background:

The schools name commemrates Ellen Wilkinson (1881-1947) a feminist, a suffragette and twice elected MP. Ellen Wilknson is situated in the Mid-Beckton of Newham's Docklands, Ellen Wilkinson Primary lies on the south side of Tollgate Road at the junction of Dove Approach. The building structure is one level with an open plan layout. It is designed to accommodate infant and junior children. There are two classes per year group and no class exceeds 30 pupils. Throughout the curriculum, it actively encourages pupils' acquisition of knowledge, understanding, skills and attitudes to develop their self-respect and creativity. At Ellen Wilkinson Primary School it positively encourages equality of opportunity with regard to gender, race, disability and class. The school assembly is non-denominational and it explores the teaching of all faiths, which are represented in Britain today. All children participate in gymnastics, team games, field events and other related sporting activities. Parents, Teachers and Supporters (PTS) group meets regularly and takes an active interest in the school. A variety of local community groups also meet here weekly, such as, clubs and scouts, brownies, a judo club, a dance club and a local Church group.
