Background:

Furzedown Primary School was opened just before World War I and, because it was temporarily housed in iron buildings, was nicknamed 'The Tin School'. A bungalow built in 1924 still houses the school, together with hutted classrooms added in 1951 and 1973. In 1990, further building took place to extend the school's intake from nursery and infants to the full primary age range. There is a small yard to one side of the building and lawns to the other. The children's efforts in the school garden have been rewarded on a number of occasions when they have won cups and trophies from the Wandsworth and London Flowers' Lovers Society, one of which was presented by the Queen Mother. Pupils' extra-curricular interests also cover sports, art, French, dancing, poetry, reading and board games. Notable sporting achievements have included representing Wandsworth in the all-London games for swimming, athletics and hockey, and reaching the national swimming finals after the all-London heats. Furzedown received Investor in People status in 1996 and won a Health Promoting Primary award, a Charter Mark and an ECO award in 1997. Pupils recently chose to raise money for the Malcolm Sergeant Children's Cancer Fund, the Roald Dahl Foundation and the Blue Peter Appeal. The pupils also donated food at Harvest Festival to the Spires Centre and to older members of the local community.
