Background:
Founded in 1883, Newport Junior is housed in a two-storey red brick Victorian building and a modern four classroom block. Set in an area of 'high mobility among the local population', this is an 'urban, multi-cultural' school. The site is shared by an infant school and both schools benefit from an environmental area with a pond. A national pollution monitoring station is also situated on this shared site. A wildlife club operates after school as part of a joint project with the London Wildlife Trust. Newport Junior has a 'high proportion' of pupils with special educational needs (SEN) and for whom English is a second language. All year groups are supported by classroom assistants who 'give targeted support to small groups of children on a regular basis'. In Year 6 additional support is provided by a learning support teacher and a speech therapist runs a communication group for a small number of pupils.
