Background:
The school occupied a large Victorian building near the River Thames until 1975, when it moved to its current location in pleasant surroundings facing Southwark Park in the historical setting of Rotherhithe, where it occupies a single-storey building. There is a leisure centre opposite the school gate and this is used by the school for swimming lessons. Extra-curricular activities include football, rugby and drama, for which the school has received many shields, trophies and awards. A group of Year 6 pupils was recently filmed by BBC2 for 'Campaign Live', speaking about and debating national issues, and was later visited by Paul Boateng, Minister for Youth, who was interested in their ideas. The children are involved in regular charity fundraising for Comic Relief, children's charities, third world disasters and cancer research, through events such as a 'wild hair day'. Senior citizens are invited to Christmas and summer concerts. The school has a school council with reps for each class and a 'pal rangers' system where Year 6 helps younger pupils in the playground. The school is a happy, caring school, where the children come first. Mutual respect between staff, children and parents lends to a good learning environment in a Catholic Christian setting.
