Background:

St Mary's Kilburn Church of England Primary School was founded in 1872. It moved to its current site in the 1970s. Years of campaigning culminated in the award of a major government grant to build a new St Mary's school on this new site. The Bishop of London opened St Mary's new school building in July 1991. Hans Haenlein MBE and his associates, in a partnership of the school governors, The London Diocesan Board for schools and the London Education authority, designated the new building and grounds. The building is laid out around an internal quadrangle. The central space of the school is in effect a covered courtyard that can be divided with a movable screen. This gives a much larger floor space for drama, and other indoor activities than many other primary schools enjoy. Classrooms have movable screens between some adjoining pairs, allowing further flexibility in ways of teaching. The school can accommodate up to 230 pupils. In 1998 the school opened a long-planned new nursery class, with its own playground. The school has a library, two rooms for small groups, a music room, medical and staff rooms. Outside there are separate playgrounds for infants and juniors, grassed areas and an ecology garden and pond. The school also has its own mini-recycling centre. The school is linked to the churches of St Mary with All Souls', Abbey Road and St James', Sheriff Road, in Kilburn. The school aims to encourage each child to value and develop his or her own gifts and skills, to acquire enthusiasm and skills for learning, and to respect each other and build up a community of love.
